I am a licensed mental health counselor who has been in private practice for 15 years. I am also a certified chemical dependency counselor and certified sex therapist. Most of my work has been done in Chicago, but I am now a Florida resident and continuing the work that brings me a deep sense of fulfillment. My clients are diversified, which I love, and I will work with anyone who commits to the process of learning and growing. My style is relaxed and personable. I am interactive in therapy sessions and believe that a therapeutic alliance between therapist and client is essential. My intention is to create a safe place so that real work can happen. An important piece of my work is being trained and certified as a life/ relationship coach. Often a client doesn t need to go back into their pathology and so we work together on what is happening now, where they would like to go, and How they intend to get to their dreams/visions. I love how passionate people become when they see possibility. For me every day is another day of possibility. I like to keep it simple”.

As human beings, many of us have the desire to achieve and maintain mental and physical health and well being. I work with the acknowledgement and understanding that the body and mind are not separate, but intertwined components of being. Combining my training and experience as both a licensed clinical social worker and a licensed massage therapist allows me to assist people to work toward this goal in a holistic way. For over 20 years, I have been involved within the GLBT community in a number of ways as an activist and an advocate. I work with individuals, couples, families, and groups as both a therapist and an educator. As a psychotherapist, I have worked with people living with HIV and AIDS, with substance abuse, with depression, with stress, with anxiety, and with those people who simply want to experience growth, healing, or discovery in their lives. As a body worker, I assist people with relaxation, stress reduction, and healing of physical injury through massage and subtle energy work. My experience with this exciting combination of healing approaches in working with the body-mind allows me to help those people I work with to discover a more balanced life. Swift solutions to life problems are our priority. HAN is an acronym for "here and now", a basic principle of "mindfulness" supporting the work we do. The power of the present moment is extraordinary in stimulating personal growth. We take an eclectic approach to resolve issues of trauma, addiction and attachment difficulty. With compassion, we can make changes in our lives that will bring those we love closer and make us more resilient families and people. Mindfulness therapies develop clarity, emotional intelligence and eventually, compassion for ourselves and others. We learn about real intimacy and welcome it back into our lives. www.hancounseling.com

It is said that the real voyage of discovery is not seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. The challenge and reward of the therapeutic process lies in this very personal journey. It is through the exploration within that one can discover true self awareness. It requires readiness to look honestly at oneself, identifying the areas that need development, and having the willingness to effect change in ways that will enhance one s life. What are the rewards? Improved relationships, increased self esteem and self regard, improved self confidence, and enhanced communication and coping skills, and most importantly, self acceptance. I have witnessed the effectiveness of the therapeutic process when one is committed, ready and receptive to the process. There is power in the process. I recommend it for anyone who is ready to see their life improve. I have worked in the field for over twenty years. Licensed as a clinical psychologist, I am currently in a group practice in East Fort Lauderdale. I have worked extensively in the LGBT community in individual, couples and group therapy. I have done research with lesbian couples and relationship satisfaction, In addition I have been teaching Masters level courses as an adjunct professor in Miami. I also do clinical supervision for students and licensure candidates.

My work as a therapist is an individualized journey with each person, group or couple who comes to see me. Part of the deep satisfaction for me, even after twenty-eight years of practice, is seeing another person do the work of coming to know themselves, hear their own voice and speak the truth about their lives. I am supported in my work by a variety of training. First was Gestalt therapy, which still guides my work philosophically. I have also trained in group work, play therapy, hypnosis, massage and clinical supervision. I enjoy training and supervising beginning therapists. I love to learn, and each person who has come through my door has been my teacher as well as my client. Lately I find myself, in my beliefs and in my work, going back to the basics. I believe people grow in safety, and sometimes the most powerful technique is simply to be present and to listen. People who come to therapy are often profoundly lonely, and just to be heard and understood is a first step in healing. My most recent professional adventure is an approach to group work/body work/spirituality called Authentic Movement. It is profound and wonderful work, and I welcome your calls and questions about it.

My holistic approach includes attention to affect, cognition and behavior, existential questions, family of origin and life span development, as well as systems of interactions. I have worked extensively with clients struggling with sexual orientation identity development. I choose interventions to bring into the foreground, the dimension(s) that are out of balance or neglected. Frequently I use cognitive interventions to begin this process, but I am comfortable using techniques from different theoretical orientations to help my clients achieve their goals. I work to make the therapeutic relationship one of support, understanding and appropriate measures of caring and challenges to facilitate change. My areas of expertise are: LGBT identity development, self-acceptance and adjustment process, recovery from substance abuse and other addictive disorders, overcoming depression and anxiety, coping with loss and bereavement, developing and enhancing intimate relationships, managing and thriving with chronic illness, navigating career challenges and choices.

My greatest difficulty in life has been to learn to value myself, first as the person I am and can be and then as a friend, son, brother, spouse/partner, spiritual-being and therapist. This is a struggle I share in common with those I see in counseling. Many of us believe that no one really understands the stresses and difficulties we struggle with and furthermore if they did understand, they wouldn't care. My goal--learned over 20-plus years of practice as a therapist--in counseling those struggling with anxiety, depression, sexual difficulties, problems with a spouse/partner or child; job or career choice; alcohol and drug issues is to assist in together finding new, productive and lasting solutions and to know that another person can know and does care. My practice includes working with individuals, couples, groups and families.
